Komm & Iss takes place once a month at our office at Dienerstrasse 16. Doors open at 18:30. As a special exception during the Red Culture Days, Komm & Iss will be held at the Festival Center, moving to the Feminist Strike House community room in case of bad weather.
For us, Komm & Iss has a political dimension alongside its cultural aspect and welcoming atmosphere. We live in a society where every part of life is subordinated to corporate profit imperatives. Many people are limited in their nutrition and hunger is widespread. Globally, enough food is produced to feed 12–14 billion people—therefore more than enough. Yet 800 million people go hungry, and roughly 9 million die from malnutrition every year. Another example of capitalism's brutality and madness. Our goal is to demonstrate alternatives rooted in solidarity and intensify the struggle against this barbaric society. With Komm & Iss, we want to make a statement against this.
We need a society where people matter more than corporate profits. And we can only fight for this collectively.

Eines haben wir Menschen gemeinsam: wir werden täglich älter. Doch so banal die Erkenntnis ist; wer sorgt sich um uns im Alter?
In «CARICIAS» entwirft die Compagnie Dalang & Co. ein Talkshow-Format in dem laut, kritisch und mit Humor über Alter, Pflege und Liebe nachgedacht wird.
Durch den Theaterabend führt die lebensgrosse Puppe Maria Gonzalez gemeinsam mit ihrer Assistentin Frida Léon Beraud und der Pflegeexpertin Milena Petrovic. Obwohl Maria selbst nicht mehr die Jüngste ist, steckt sie voller Tatendrang: in ihrer Show deckt sie soziale Missstände im Bereich Pflege und Migration auf, beschäftigt sich leidenschaftlich mit Fragen der Liebe und lässt junge wie alte Menschen via Live-Schaltung zu Wort kommen. Gemeinsam mit ihren Kompliz*innen bringt Maria Alltagssituationen aus der Pflege auf die Bühne, sie erzählt von ihrer Erfahrung bei einer Kuscheltherapeutin, wirft einen Blick in die Zukunft und erklärt, wie durch lebenslanges Lernen Jung & Alt besser zusammenleben können.

Umarell: italienischer Rentner, der Bauarbeiten beobachtet
In L’histoire de Souleymane (Boris Lojkine, Frankreich, 2024, 94 Min) kriegen wir einen Teil von SouleymanesGeschichte mit: In Paris angekommen, muss Souleymanesich seine körperlichen und emotionalen Energien auf die entwürdigen Kämpfe um Asyl und Arbeit aufteilen. Wir begleiten ihn bei seinen Kurier-Streifzügen durch die fremde Stadt, bei Begegnungen mit Kundinnen, Mitarbeiterinnen, anderen Migrantinnen und Polizisten. Sie alle verkörpern auf die eine oder andere Weise Grenzen und Gewalt, die europäische Grossstädte strukturieren und für Migrantinnen zu einem Minenlauf machen.
So individuell wie allgemein zeigt der Film auf, wie die Verheissung von Plattformarbeit eine allgemeine Präkarisierung im europäischen Arbeitsmarkt fördert und wie Migrant*innen davon mehrfach betroffen sind.
Gemeinsam schauen wir Filme, die aufzeigen, wie eng die Prekarisierung von Arbeitsverhältnissen und Migrationspolitik miteinander verflochten sind. Der Bogen spannt sich von der rassistischen Arbeitspolitik in der Schweiz der 1970er Jahre bis hin zu heutigen Formen prekärer Beschäftigung in Lieferdiensten, digitaler Plattformarbeit und informellen Ökonomien. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Mechanismen von Ausgrenzung und Ausbeutung nicht verschwinden, sondern in veränderter Form immer wieder neu hervortreten.
Im Anschluss an die Vorführungen möchten wir mit Gästen und Publikum nicht nur über die Inhalte der Filme ins Gespräch kommen, sondern auch darüber, welche Rolle das Wo, Wann und Wie des gemeinsamen Schauens spielt.

Learning Palestine are a group of artists, academics, intellectuals and community members, who aim to disseminate knowledge on the history of the ongoing struggle for justice, liberation, and freedom of Palestine and the Palestinian People. We wish to practice new and old ways of disseminating this knowledge, that function out with the constrains of social media and corporate controlled networks. During a morning session we will take texts from the new collection of the Learning Palestine pamphlets and collectively translate them from English to German. Fluency in both languages is no prerequisite for participation. The text will be prepared for print using autonomous software designed by Hackers and Designers and the new publications will be made available for printing and distributing. Registration via lpworkshopzurich@proton.me is welcome, but the event is also open to spontaneous participants.

Die Arbeiter der Pianofabrik Burger & Jacobi in Biel traten im Juni 1974 in den Streik, weil ihnen die Firma den im Schreinergewerbe vereinbarten 13. Monatslohn nicht zahlen wollte. Der Film zeigt den Verlauf des Streiks und die Erfahrungen der streikenden Arbeiter auf, er will nicht Interpretationen von Autoren über diesen diesen Arbeitskonflikt an den Mann bringen, sondern diesen Arbeitskonflikt, von den beteiligten Arbeitern selbst dargestellt, so vermitteln, dass er zum Gegenstand der politischen Diskussion und Reflexion werden kann.
An einer Matinee wollen wir uns im Sinne einer Auseinandersetzung mit unserer eigenen Geschichte der Arbeiter:innenkultur den Film "Ein Streik ist keine Sonntagsschule" schauen. Anschliessend gibt es die Möglichkeit zur Diskussion mit Koautor Mathias Knauer.

Since the collapse of real socialism and the intensified ideological attacks against everything socialist, many revolutionary organizations and movements in Europe lack awareness of socialist culture and art as a means of supporting their struggle. In the panel “Culture and Revolution?” we will take a look at two strong international revolutionary movements in which art and culture are part of the struggle. We will look at concrete examples from mass work and try to draw parallels to the struggle here, while remaining aware that culture in capitalist centers has a different character than in colonized areas.

Jun Saturay is a Filipino activist, cook, and cultural worker with a refugee/migrant background. He works with different protest art media, including theatre, music, video, and puppetry.
Deniz Deman is a Kurdish artist who has been active in the Kurdish cultural movement for many years. As a singer, filmmaker, and author, she sees art and cultural work as an important part of political struggle.

Die Roten Falken Zürich sind eine sozialistische Kinder- und Jugendgruppe. An unseren wöchentlichen Treffen sind wir viel draussen und verbringen unsere Zeit im Wald und am See, auch im Winter wollen wir nicht zu viel Zeit mit Stubenhocken verbringen und gehen Schlittschuhlaufen, ins Hallenbad oder verbringen den Nachmittag in unserem Gruppenlokal, wo wir basteln, backen und spielen. Uns ist es wichtig, nachhaltiges Denken, wie auch Selbstbestimmung und Kreativität zu fördern und zu leben. Im Falkenalltag haben wir die Möglichkeit, uns selbst zu sein, damit wir uns austoben können, damit wir träumen können und damit wir alle zusammen mit lauter Stimme unsere Forderung nach einer gerechteren Welt vertreten können.

Seit Herbst 2020 ist das Worker Center von "Zürich Solidarisch" das Herzstück eines wachsenden Solidarischen Netzwerks. Illegalität, Kriminalität und die ständige Angst abgeschoben zu werden, sind ihr Alltag.

experi_theater is a decolonial performance group in Zurich. PLANTATION #2 is the second performance work in a series of artistic investigations into the history and practices of the plantation. As an ongoing, experimental practice, experi_theater has been exploring a non-white, critical view of the colonial realities for years.
PLANTATION # 2 focuses on narratives of policing BIPOC* bodies that go beyond a chronicle of individual cases and make visible a system of inequality and injustice in society. The performance addresses a journey from life to prison, from the mechanisms of the criminal justice system to abolitionist practices that can support us in resisting, advocating for change and moving forward together.

Marching with the Kasama is the working title of a documentary made together with the revolutionary movement in the Philippines. The footage offers a glimpse into their ongoing anti-imperialist fight. Through the voices of peasants, workers, and guerrilla fighters, the film portrays a movement striving for land, liberation, and people’s power.
As part of Rote Kulturtage, three edited sections of the film will be presented, with space between each screening for discussion, information, and questions. We want to engage with comrades on the challenges inherent in portraying armed struggle through film — and to collectively explore how the art of cinema can become a weapon within the revolutionary struggle.

1967 war der Mord an Benno Ohnesorg durch die Berliner Polizei ein Schlüsselerlebnis für eine ganze Generation. Der Kampf gegen die Militarisierung, die Notstandgesetze und den Vietnam-Krieg politisierte die Jugend. Der Kontinuität der alten faschistischen Eliten, der verlogenen Moral und dem Zwang autoritärer Lebensentwürfe, wurde der radikale Aufbruch zu neuen solidarischen Verhältnissen entgegengestellt. Die Erfahrung vom 2. Juni 1967, die Repression durch die Polizei und Justiz, die Hetze der Medien und der Politik, radikalisierte die antiautoritäre Bewegung. Es begann eine breite Diskussion, mit welcher Strategie eine gesellschaftliche Veränderung erreicht werden kann und wer das Subjekt dieser Veränderung sein wird. Es gab Befreiungsbewegungen und Guerillaorganisationen in Lateinamerika, Asien und Afrika, die gegen Imperialismus, Kolonialismus und Rassismus kämpften. Eine große Hoffnung auf Emanzipation vom Kapitalismus lag in der Luft. Die revolutionären Kräfte in den imperialistischen Zentren stellten sich in den Kontext des weltweiten revolutionären Prozesses und begannen mit bewaffneten Angriffen im »Herzen der Bestie«.
Die Lesung ist eine kritisch-historische Intervention zum bewaffneten Kampf der 70er Jahre. Eine Montage aus Reflexionen, Dokumenten und Stellungnahmen ehemaliger Protagonist*innen der bewaffneten Kämpfe. Die fragmentarischen Texte sollen den Prozess, die Hoffnung und Stimmung einer Generation, welche damals die Waffen in die Hand nahm der heutigen Generation erlebbar machen.

Das kann wenig verwundern, fallen doch Geburtsstunde und Siegeszug des Rap exakt mit dem Neoliberalismus zusammen. Doch was ist genau das Verhältnis von Rap und Kapitalismus? Gehen Kritik und Widerstand bloss von Conscious-Rap aus oder steckt auch im Gangsterrap etwas Subversives? Wie gestaltet sich die Beziehung von Rap und Kapitalismus jenseits des Westens? Und welche Rolle spielen Geschlechterverhältnisse im Zusammenspiel von Rap und Kapitalismus?

Die kurdische Kultur hat für uns einen besonderen Stellenwert – sie ist Ausdruck unserer Identität, Geschichte und Gemeinschaft. Unsere Volkstanzgruppe besteht seit über zehn Jahren und hat ihren Sitz in Zürich. In unserem Workshop geben wir einen Einblick in die reiche kurdische Kultur anhand ihrer traditionellen Tänze.
Wir erzählen über die Bedeutung der Volkstänze in der kurdischen Gesellschaft, zeigen traditionelle Tanzkleidung und führen zwei bis drei kurdische Tänze auf. Alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen, mit uns in die lebendige Welt der kurdischen Musik und Bewegung einzutauchen.

Als lesbische jüdische Fem aus der US-Arbeiter:innenklasse schreibt Joan Nestle über Community, linken Widerstand, Sex und Klassenverhältnissen und schafft uns so einen Einblick in lesbische Geschichte und Kultur von unten. In ihren Texte widmet sie sich den Menschen, die sie berühren: den Butches und Fems der New Yorker Barkultur, ihren Genossinnen, ihrer Mutter, Freundinnen und Geliebten. In Essays berichtet sie von ihren politischen Kämpfen seit den 1950ern – ob an der Seite der Bürgerrechtsbewegung und Gewerkschaften oder in lesbisch-feministischen Bündnissen. Ihre Sex-Storys spielen mit den Dimensionen von Geschlecht, Lust und Macht. Liebevoll und kämpferisch zeigt Joan Nestle, welche Kraft lesbisches Begehren hat, wo Widerstand gefordert ist und wie wichtig Gemeinschaft ist.
Wir lesen an dem Abend aus dem Buch, sprechen darüber, was “Begehren und Widerstand” in uns auslöst und was es für unsere heutige Praxis und Perspektive bedeutet. Wir wollen auch den Raum für die Community öffnen, um über Nestles Texte und Gedanken zu diskutieren.

Als linker und kollektiv geführter Gastrobetrieb gibt es das Café Zähringer bereits seit 1981. Im Niederdörfli erleben wir die kapitalistische Schnelllebigkeit und Unverfrohrenheit hautnah. Restaurants und Geschäfte kommen und gehen, langjährige Lädeli gehen zugrunde, weil sie mit den Preisen nicht mitgehen können. Doch das Zähringer lebt und widersetzt sich all diesen Widerständen einer konsumgetriebenen Gastro-Welt.
Doch wir sind nicht allein! In der ganzen Schweiz finden sich vereinzelt solche linke und kollektiv betriebene Orte. Im Rahmen einer Podiumsdiskussion laden wir euch ein mit uns darüber zu sprechen, was es heisst in einem Kollektiv zu arbeiten, was für Arbeit reinfliesst. Aber auch darüber zu sprechen, was es bedeutet in einer kapitalistischen Welt links und kollektiv geführt zu sein und wo es Widersprüche gibt.

Fußball sollte unpolitisch sein? Diese Vorstellung wird immer wieder vertreten. Doch was passiert, wenn Fussballfans weltweit beginnen, sich klar für Palästina zu positionieren? In dem Vortrag von Matthias Dehne und Raphael Molter geht es um die Frage, warum gerade im Fußball über Palästina und den Gaza-Krieg gesprochen und protestiert werden muss.
Dabei werfen wir einen Blick auf Ultras-Gruppen weltweit und die Kampagne »Show ‘Israel’ the Red Card« und zeigen, wie Fans ihre antikoloniale Solidarität ausdrücken.

Am 4. November 2025 laden wir zu einem Chorabend ins feministische Streikhaus ein. Wir lernen und singen vor allem gemeinsam Lieder feministischer Bewegungen aus verschiedenen Kontexten, erzählen ein bisschen etwas zu ihrer Entstehung, sowie auch zur Arbeit des feministischen Streikkollektivs Zürich.
Singen gibt uns Mut und verbindet uns mit den Kämpfen, die schon vor uns geführt wurden oder zeitgleich andernorts stattfinden. Es stärkt uns als Kollektiv und hat uns auch schon vor Engstirnigkeit bewahrt: Nach einer Singpause lässt sich in der Kollektivsitzung plötzlich überraschend einfach einen Konsens finden.

Hatten bis in die 1950er-Jahre hinein die SP und Gewerkschaften die Schweizerische Arbeiter:innenkultur geführt, verloren diese Institutionen mehr und mehr an Bedeutung und eine neue Kraft tauchte auf, die unsere Gesellschaft bis heute prägt: Die Arbeitsmigration.
Die Werktätigen wurden unterteilt in «Einheimische» und «Migrant:innen». Heute spricht niemand mehr von der «Arbeiterklasse». Und der Begriff «Arbeiter» ist zum Synonym von «Ausländer» geworden. Regisseur Samir erzählt einmal mehr auf unterhaltsame Weise mithilfe von
Animationen, Musik-Clips, Zeitzeug:innen, privaten Familienfotos und unbekanntem Archivmaterial die Geschichte der Migration aus den südlichen Nachbarländern in die Schweiz, von der Nachkriegszeit bis heute.
Am 4.11 zeigen wir den Film "Die wundersame Verwandlung der Arbeiterklasse in Ausländer" mit einer einführenden Diskussion mit dem ehemaligen Präsident der Unia Schweiz, Vasco Padrina um 19:00. Hier sprechen wir über die Geschichte der Gewerkschaftsbewegung und die Organisierung migrantischer Arbeiter:innen. Wir schauen uns auch besonders die Rolle von widerständiger Kultur damals an, wie sie im Film portraitiert wird, und versuchen Perspektiven für heute zu finden.

Unsere Videoinstallation basiert auf Basel al-Arajs Text Exiting Law and Entering Revolution (2024). Al-Araj, palästinensischer Denker, Schriftsteller und Widerstandskämpfer, wurde 2017 von israelischen Soldaten getötet. Sein Text zeigt, dass Widerstand dort entsteht, wo Menschen die Logik des Gehorsams durchbrechen und die Beherrschten beginnen, sich gegen die Ordnung ihrer Unterdrückung zu organisieren.
Exiting Law and Entering Revolution entfaltet diesen Gedanken entlang der Figur des „Outlaws“, jener, die von der Gesellschaft ausgestossen und kriminalisiert werden, aber gerade darin den Raum des Widerstands eröffnen. Al-Araj macht anhand von Revolutionär:innen wie Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, Malcom X, Ali La Pointe und Robin Hood sichtbar, wie Verbrechen zur Befreiung wird und das Recht an der Gerechtigkeit zerbricht.
Unsere Videoinstallation nimmt Exiting Law and Entering Revolution als Ausganspunkt: Al-Arajs Worte treffen auf Bilder des antikolonialen und antiimperialistischen Widerstandes. Sie widmet sich den Revolutionär:innen, die von der herrschenden Klasse kriminalisiert wurden, aber als Märtyrer:innen in die Geschichte eingegangen sind.
DECAF is a space-based practice of collective movement to gather and share critical thoughts, perspectives, and perceptions. It is an activity of the Centre for BIPOC/Non-white Archive, Library and Community, whose archive and library are historical collections of registered, recorded and witnessed physical writings that continue to make it necessary to share knowledge, spread voices and revive and strengthen the struggles and movements of BIPOC* people.
And DECAF is the space for an action of gathering, being, reading and listening to critical thoughts of Black Queer Trans Feminism.

Umarell: Italian pensioner watching construction work
Chez Jolie Coiffure (Rosine Mbakam, Belgium, 2018, 71min)
In "Chez Jolie Coiffure" Director Rosine Mbakam invites us into Sabine Amiyeme's hair salon in Matongé.
The Brussels neighborhood is marked by police repression against migrants.
Sabine and the other hairdressers work up to fourteen hours a day amid police raids, the stares of tourists, and constant uncertainty.
The eight-square-meter salon is a place of exchange and togetherness, where the women share their sorrows and hold each other up.
Rosine Mbakam's portrait becomes an echo of the solidarity and struggle of these illegalized women.
Together, we watch films that show how closely the precariousness of working conditions
and migration policy are intertwined. The spectrum ranges from racist
labour policies in Switzerland in the 1970s to today's forms of precarious employment
in delivery services, digital platform work and informal economies. It becomes clear that
mechanisms of exclusion and exploitation do not disappear, but re-emerge in modified
forms.
Following the screenings, we would like to engage with guests and the audience not only in a discussion about the
content of the films, but also about the role played by the where, when and
how of watching together.

The multi-layered performance starts with a Manobo Ritual "Uyagdok," by Reyaa. This is an indigenous ritual for asking permission to enter the forest or natural areas, which helps conserve resources. The ritual transitions into revolutionary songs "Awit ng Pag-asa (Song of Hope,)" Awit ng Rebolusyunaryo (Revolutionay's Song}, and "Martsa ng Bayan (People's March), performed by John Daw and Reyaa.
The performance features John Daw singing while Reyaa (choreographer-mover} performs with a background video showing a montage of dramatic movements, revolutionary music, social realist paintings, protest marches, and an effigy burning ritual.
The performance aims to depict the Filipino people's struggle for national and social liberation against imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat campitalism. John Daw and Reyaa's performances, and the backgound video incorporates layers of creative dance/movements, sounds/music, still and moving visual images depict the people's resistance and struggle.
The background video features a montage of two young movers superimposed over a sampling of social realist paintings, protest marches, and an effigy burning ritual. Artists and cultural workers in the national democratic movement are organized under the banner of the ARTISTA AT MANUNULAT NG SAMBAYANAN (ARMAS) / Artists and Writers for the People." John Daw and Reyaa provide the third, real-time/live layer to the composition.
Resistance is as much a part of everyday life as a good jumper. All the better if it sparkles and puts you in a good mood, because a good mood helps enormously in the revolution.

Some assistance, tools, transfer foil, inspiration, rhinestones and a heat press are available. You'll need to bring a little patience, a reasonably steady hand or tolerance for frustration, ideas for what you want to make, the textiles you want to decorate and, depending on your ambitions, an hour or more.
This is a creative space where we share DIY-style ideas and skills and decorate clothes together. Space and materials are limited. The studio is designed for people who work independently. (Children are also welcome, accompanied by an adult and from an age where they are unlikely to swallow tools or rhinestones.)
About the technique: Hotfix rhinestones have a layer of glue on the back that is heated by a heat press and bonds with the fabric.
Not all fabrics are equally suitable – tricot has proven to work well, for example on T-shirts and sweatshirts, but woven fabrics also work. It's a bit of trial and error!

D-V-D’s screening of films serves as a means for BIPOC* voices to be heard in films and to present the marginalized approaches in film art that use decolonial visual culture to challenge and dismantle colonial perspectives and, through dialogue, make hidden voices, knowledge and visions of the future visible.
The films bring BIPOC* stories and perspectives to the fore, creating space for narratives that are often overlooked or dismissed. Through decolonial elements, the films explore themes such as racial inequality in capitalist societies. By combining science fiction and social criticism, these films challenge viewers to question social norms while giving a voice to those who have been silenced.

Sarah Maldoror's ‘Sambizanga’ (1972 I 1h 42m)
The first film produced in Angola, directed by Sarah Maldoror, was made with the help of people who were part of the African anti-colonial resistance movements and aims to display the key role of women in anti-colonial strugles that led to the independence of Angola from Portugal.
Djibril Diop Mambéty's ‘Hyènes’ (1992 I 1h 50m)
The African speculative fiction by Djibril Diop Mambéty, freely based on a play by Dürrenmatt ‘Der Besuch der alten Dame’, shows the arrival of the exiled Linguère Ramatou back in Colobane. Now one of the richest women in the world, she returns home looking for justice. A playful and clever way to show how wealth and power work together and what is needed in a society for your voice to be heard.

sogenannten „Turker!, der nach dem Verlust seines studentischen Jobs während der
Lockdowns Mikroaufgaben auf Amazon Mechanical Turk erledigt – etwa Gesichter auf
Google Street View verpixelt oder Satellitenbilder analysiert. Er verlässt nie sein kleines
Dachzimmer und der einzige Kontakt den er pflegt ist der mit anderen Klickarbeiter:innen über den Bildschirm.
Was unmittelbar sichtbar wird: Diese Klickarbeit – unsicher, schlecht bezahlt, anonym –
ist eine Arbeit, die oftmals außerhalb klassischer Sozialverträge stattfindet, ohne Zugang
zu Stabilität, gewerkschaftlicher Vertretung oder gesicherter sozialer Absicherung. Diese
Klickarbeit ist unsicher, schlecht bezahlt und entkoppelt von jeder sozialen Absicherung –
sie findet jenseits klassischer Arbeitsverhältnisse statt. En attendant les robots legt so die
Schattenseiten der digitalen Ökonomie offen: Es wird sichtbar, wie Ausbeutung und
Vereinzelung sich in neuen technologischen Formen fortsetzen und wie der
algorithmische Kapitalismus zunehmend in immaterielle Sphären eindringt – in unsere
Denkweisen, Gefühle und Interaktion – und menschliche Subjektivität und soziale
Beziehungen damit gewissermaßen kolonialisiert.
Gemeinsam schauen wir Filme, die aufzeigen, wie eng die Prekarisierung von Arbeitsverhältnissen
und Migrationspolitik miteinander verflochten sind. Der Bogen spannt sich von der rassistischen
Arbeitspolitik in der Schweiz der 1970er Jahre bis hin zu heutigen Formen prekärer Beschäftigung
in Lieferdiensten, digitaler Plattformarbeit und informellen Ökonomien. Dabei wird deutlich, dass
Mechanismen von Ausgrenzung und Ausbeutung nicht verschwinden, sondern in veränderter
Form immer wieder neu hervortreten.
Im Anschluss an die Vorführungen möchten wir mit Gästen und Publikum nicht nur über die
Inhalte der Filme ins Gespräch kommen, sondern auch darüber, welche Rolle das Wo, Wann und
Wie des gemeinsamen Schauens spielt.

Year after year, femicide cases in Switzerland continue to rise.
Even more than we ourselves, our mothers faced structural sexism. Even married women from privileged backgrounds couldn't freely choose a profession. Sexualized violence was part of everyday life for nearly all women.
How did our mothers live? How have their experiences been inscribed in our bodies, in our thinking and actions? We share anonymously and focus on exemplary and structural experiences. This way, we build a collective narrative space.
Trixa Arnold and Ilja Komarov have been creating musical theater projects together since 2007. Their work stands out for its explicitly accessible approach. They work from the conviction that the political also manifests itself in everyday life and its actions. Currently, they are working with oral histories and memories that they collect, condense, and stage around specific themes.

Filmclub Populaire film screening: “Portuali” by Perla Sardella, 2024, 81 min, Italian with English subtitles.
The documentary film Portuali depicts the daily life of dockworkers and the world of the union from the inside, offering a snapshot of the activities of C.A.L.P., the Collective of Autonomous Port Workers of Genoa, between 2019 and 2023. A group of workers groups together to oppose their own union, denounce the passage of weapons-laden ships, and discuss the need for international solidarity networks. Their goal: no more deadly weapons in their docks, no complicity with wars they refuse to be part of. They fight for workplace safety, more rights, and for a form of unionism that also incorporates gender justice, environmental protection, and social struggles.
Portuali is a film that explores work and the world of unions from within, as well as the various facets of militant activism – laying the groundwork for a new narrative of class struggle. Director Perla Sardella builds the film around the collective dimension, using a cinematic language that invites listening and motivates action. The camera stays close to the faces in assemblies, the rituals of resistance, the cracks in the system. Archival footage meets the rhythm of the present – today's struggles stand in continuity with historic labor battles.
Portuali is a combative, deeply human film about self-organization, strikes, and solidarity – and about how workers don't just demand a fairer world, but actively help shape it.

As long as we work for our bosses' wallets and states declare war on each other, classes will exist and the class struggle will continue. The diversity of the working class is reflected in its various struggles. Let us draw on this diversity and bring it all together under the motto: from the class for the class!
We are called upon to fight against fascist tendencies, ecological destruction and war. The working class and its organisations resist day in day out the attacks of capital and build on their experiences to develop a vision of a world free from exploitation and destruction. And culture can make a decisive contribution: it can strengthen solidarity and collectivity, nourish the common struggle and make the vision of a classless society more tangible.
Let us build on the culture created by our predecessors. Let us discuss together and experience the transformative power of art and culture. Whether at the festival centre, in the Volkshaus, on the sports field or in the streets: let us immerse ourselves together in the creative power of our class and strengthen ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead!

The question of how to finance the Red Culture Days has been with us ever since we considered founding a festival of working-class culture. On the one hand, we firmly believe that cultural work must be remunerated and that a workers' culture festival should not generate further precarity in the industry. On the other hand, we interface with political and revolutionary work, which cannot and should not be financed by institutional donors.
We therefore ultimately decided to take a pragmatic approach: we will finance our structures with union funds, with the support of foundations and through crowdfunding. If programme items require funding, we decide on a case-by-case basis and in consultation with those responsible for the event whether we have the financial resources to do so and whether and how the event can (nevertheless) be held. Some projects that require more certainty in planning and that we consider an indispensable part of the programme will be prioritised and listed as expenditure items in the budget. We will make this budget available as soon as the expenses can be quantified more clearly.
All Red Culture Days events will be free of charge. We will collect donations during the events and, in some cases, recommend entry prices. We will collect this money and, after the Red Culture Days, hold a fund distribution meeting to allocate the ‘surplus’ money to the individual artists/cultural workers.

Until the 1930s, Switzerland had a thriving working-class culture: countless workers' associations, film groups, choirs, music clubs and theatres reflected the political realities of the working class and were born from its organisations, such as trade unions and the Communist Party. In the second half of the 20th century, daring cultural experiments emerged from a left-wing movement that served to revive the culture described above and to break new ground in creating autonomous and youth-inspired cultural and social spaces.
Today, many places that originally belonged to the labour movement and the socialist left have disappeared or been commercialised. There are only a few places and moments left where workers' art and culture are practised in the context of political struggle and the socialist vision.
History demonstrates the potential of culture to fuel and consolidate class consciousness arising from concrete political and economic struggles. Cultural work has always been consciously cultivated and used by the socialist left. We are convinced that strategic engagement with cultural issues is essential for the long-term organisation of the working class.
‘We’ are a group of young people who see ourselves as part of the labour movement and the socialist left, and are active in various trade unions, revolutionary organisations and social movements. Many of us have a background as artists or cultural workers.
Cultural work is still being performed in the socialist left today. However, we lack collective discussions about what our culture is, which artistic and cultural forms can contribute to the emancipation of the class and to what extent working-class culture, as opposed to bourgeois culture, can be a field of class struggle.
That is why we have launched the Red Culture Days: we are attempting to create a mosaic of existing socialist culture and invite discussion about it. We therefore intend to pay particular attention to cultural work carried out by organised forces. In the hope of forging a tool for political struggle together.
At the Rote Kulturtage, we want to create a space of solidarity. There is no place for discrimination or abusive behaviour. If such behaviour does occur, our awareness structures always focus on the person affected and their needs.
Awarenessteam: At events with large numbers of people, there is an awareness person who provides support when people need help and intervenes when people experience discrimination. They are identified by an orange glow lanyard. In addition, the festival hotline

Awareness concepts are often criticised, and rightly so, for shifting responsibility for behaviour exclusively onto the individual, for lacking a focus on material support for marginalised and discriminated persons (or groups of persons), or for reducing class conflict to the mere level of discrimination. Nevertheless, we are convinced that such awareness concepts are necessary precisely because of our class standpoint. The working class is not a homogeneous mass. There are many internal contradictions and also discriminatory behaviour within the class. However, it is important to find a way to fight together and form a common class consciousness. This can be supported by an awareness concept. What the awareness concept specifically achieves is the establishment of materially based structures that combat systematic oppression and discrimination.
